General Requirements
Modern Phytomorphology accepts manuscripts prepared in English.
We have tried to make the procedure of preparing and sending manuscripts as simple as possible, nevertheless the requirements set out below are mandatory. These requirements are put forward on draft text, while the formatting of the final text will be changed by our pagemakers in accordance with the technical requirements of the journal. Therefore, the scope and structure of the final text may vary.
Text format: font – Times New Roman or Calibri, size 12 pt, indentation 1.25 сm, 1.5-spaced, width fitted; margins 2 cm on all four sides. Text should be represented in .doc or .docx. The size of manuscripts is unlimited, however authors should follow next instruction during their preparation.
Text sequence: 1) article title, 2) author(s), 3) affiliations (including institution, full postal address, and e-mail of corresponding author), 4) abstract (no less than 100 words), 5) keywords, 6) main text, 7) acknowledgments, 8) list of references.
The stucture of Cyrillic article MUST be next: 1) English article title, 2) English author(s), 3) English affiliations, 4) English abstract, 5) English keywords, 6) Cyrillic body text with English in-text citations, 7) Cyrillic or English acknowledgments, 8) English or transliterated list of references.
Images: should be provided as separate files with at least 300 dpi and at least 700x500 p resolution in any of Windows readable formats. They also may be placed in file of the main text to show prefered organization, but in this case separated image files also required. If figure consists of more than one image, all of them should include such attributes as letterings, legends, abbreviations, arrows and other special symbols etc., EXCEPT of numbers or letters showing the sequence of images in this figure. Such numbers or letters should be inserted in images included in text file only and later will be changed on corresponding symbols by editors to follow general style of the journal.
Tables: can be provided either in the body of the main text or as separated .xls or .xlsx files.
Captions of the figures and tables: can be provided either in file of the main text or as separated file.
For Cyrillic manuscripts captions should be duplicated by translation into the English.
References in the text: All citations in text MUST be in Romanian alphabets only. We do not allow Cyrillic in-text citations (even if this text is in Ukrainian or Russian). All Cyrillic in-text citations and citations in Reference List should be translated/transliterated correspondingly.
Please note, that there no need to translate or transliterated any references in other Romanian alphabets with diacritics (e.g., Slovakian, Polish, Romanian, German, French etc.), and they can be provided as are.
References in the text for one author should be (Kondracki 1978); for two authors (Capelletti & Poldini 1984); for three or more authors (Cieśliński et al. 2009). Also they can be represented as Kondracki (1978: 55–60) or (Kondracki 1978, 1980).
References for taxa: to increase citation and impact factor of taxonomic works, Journal recommends to indicate full author(s) citations and include related references into the Reference list for all mentioned taxa. For example, if you m entioned in text Aconitum × czarnohorense, we recomend provide it in next way: a) in text provide full name of taxon with authors and after that provide citation for taxon publication(s) with or without indication of page numbers - Aconitum × czarnohorense ( Zapał. ) Mitka (Zapałowicz 1908: 227; Mitka 2003: 77); b) add mentioned publication(s) into the References - Mitka J. 2003. The genus Aconitum L. (Ranunculaceae) in Poland and adjacent countries. A phenetic-geographic study. Institute of Botany UJ, Cracow. - Zapałowicz H. 1908. Conspectus florae Galiciae criticus. 2. Sumptibus Academiae Literarum Cracoviensis, Cracovia. This complicates text structure and requires extra work, but such solidarity will help taxonomists around the world. To check the taxa and authors, you can use IPNI, ThePlantList, Euro+Med PlantBase, AlgaeBase or any other preffered.
References in the List of References: if you are using reference manager (e.g., Mendeley), you can download a .csl file of Modern Phytomorphology citation style to organize your List of References. Otherwise you can apply Annals of Botany citation style which is closest to our. If available, DOIs must be provided at the end of citations.
All Cyrillic references in List of References MUST be translated in English or, at least, transliterated.

Journal Sections
Modern Phytomorphology considered several types of publications, depending on their structure and size. In general here are 11 Journal sections, from which only 10 should be considered as publications, and only 7 types of publications are available for choice for external authors while other 3 publication types (Corrigenda, Retractions, and Editorials) are provided exclusively by editorial staff of Modern Phytomorphology:
- Research Articles
The first main type of publications, which is characterized by traditional and logical structure (i.e. has such mandatory elements as Abstract, Introduction, Material & Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, and References) and is at least of (4)5 pages of final length. There is no upper limit of page number for research articles, but usually they do not exceed 60 pages. Usually, research articles have long list of references cited, and include supporting illustrations and/or tables.
- Correspondences
The second main type of publications in Modern Phytomorphology. Correspondences are the manuscripts of labile structure, from 1 to 4(5) pages of length. They can be with lack of some of elements (e.g., has no Conclusions) or has no text division at all. In some cases, manuscripts of 4 or 5 pages accepted for publication may be shortened by Modern Phytomorphology editors for publication in the Correspondence section with or without previous notification of author but with mandatory request for ready-to-print confirmation from correspondent author.
- Review Articles
Review articles are the third main type of publications accepted by Modern Phytomorphology, considered as articles with labile structure and size, which are devoted to general questions, provide discussions, represent author point of view, consist of literature overviews, represent book reviews, introduce new software, outline theoretical deductions, etc. Very often, Review articles have no illustrations and tables, and the main space of such articles is occupied by text.
- Short Communications
Short communications have labile structure but usually are limited by 1-2 (maximum 3) pages. They serve for representation of: a) commentaries on or additions/corrections to articles previously published in Modern Phytomorphology or other journals, etc; b) intermediate research outcomes; c) taxonomical, nomenclatural or other research notes; d) any other important notifications.
- Data Articles
The articles, which have labile structure and size, mostly provide the research data with or without discussion and general conclusions. Data provided in such articles have to be carefully described and organized in reason for further application, reuse and replication by other researchers. Such articles provide new insights for others and allow them to make new interpretations for their own research.
- Monographs
Modern Phytomorphology also can consider for publication the monographs as separated special volumes. Such monographs, on request of author(s) can bear both ISSN and ISBN numbers. In such case, ISBN number will be provided by outsource publisher. There no general limit for page number. Structure of Monographs is developed by author(s).
- Proceedings
Brief publications dedicated to scientific meetings (e.g., conferences), without abstract, and usually without text division and references. Before 2016 Modern Phytomorphology published number of such conference papers, however there was no developed division on sections. Therefore such publications are currently listed as correspondences. From 2016 Modern Phytomorphology started division on sections, and therefore such conference papers are separated and mostly published in supplementary volumes.
- Corrigenda
These are brief notifications about observed errors and mistakes in already published material, provided by editorial staff.
- Retractions
These are editorial notifications about retracted articles, which were previously published in journal. Retraction notifications are considered as separated publications, which contain information about the retracted article, reasons for its retraction, and other notes on provided decision.
- Editorials
Editorials – are the articles of labile size and format provided by Modern Phytomorphology editors, which serve for public notification, providing information about important changes, perspectives, observed difficulties, etc.
- Volume Information
Volume information includes technical pages providing information about current editorial board, publishing data, etc, as well as table of contents (TOC) for full volume. This is not considered as publication, but in some cases is important for technical reasons and therefore is listed among journal sections.
Data Preservation
All published articles are archived in Zenodo. Full volumes are also deposited on ISSUU website and can be easily searchable.
Modern Phytomorphology provides IPNI Life Science Identifiers (LSIDs) for all new published taxa. LSIDs are unique identifiers (each entry can have only one LSID and different entries can not have the same LSIDs) and represented as URNs (Uniform Resource Names). LSIDs, just like DOIs, allows long-term preservation of information and persistent accession to entries. IPNI LSIDs in Modern Phytomorphology are assigned before (than indicated directly in article text) or after publication of new taxa.
We also recommend authors to deposit their additional materials in such open databases like Zenodo, bioRxiv, arXiv, Harvard Dataverse, Morphbank, Genbank, BOLD, etc. This allows beter acces to this data and their longstanding preservation in internet. Such data can be easily crosslinked and cited in Modern Phytomorphology publications.
